  • More about One Night in Miami...

On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay, who would later become Muhammad Ali, won the world heavyweight boxing title. Instead of celebrating in a bar, he chose to spend the night in a hotel room with three close friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and American football star Jim Brown. This fictional account of that night imagines what might have happened in that small hotel room. The play "One Night in Miami..." by Kemp Powers explores the personal and political tensions of the Civil Rights Movement, and how this one night changed the course of history.

On February 25, 1964, at the age of 22, Cassius Clay, who would later become Muhammad Ali, secured the world heavyweight boxing title. Instead of celebrating in the bustling streets of Miami, he chose to spend the night in a hotel room with three close friends: activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke, and American football star Jim Brown. This fictional account of a real night imagines the possibilities that unfolded within that tiny hotel room. As the Civil Rights movement gained momentum outside, the soulful melody of "A Change is Gonna Come" filled the air.

In the midst of this historical context, four men emerged from that one night ready to shape a new world. Kemp Powers' award-winning debut play, "One Night in Miami...", seamlessly blends the personal and the political, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in history. It received the Ted Schmitt Award 2013 for its world premiere and later underwent a successful adaptation into a critically acclaimed film directed by Regina King in 2020.

Published here in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series, this play is accompanied by a brand new introduction by Matthew Xia. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the ability of theatre to illuminate the complexities of human experiences.
