The Onyx journal is a reproduction of an expensive goatskin leather book binding crafted in Amsterdam in 1835 by Friedrich W.J.C. Kolb. The KB, National Library of the Netherlands, founded in 1798, holds the intention to celebrate the written word and share Dutch creativity and innovation with the world. We are honored to partner with the KB to bring this beautiful binding to the Paperblanks collection.

Experience the opulent Dutch world of yesteryear with this majestic gold on black geometric design, meticulously reproduced from an exquisite goatskin leather book binding crafted in Amsterdam in 1835 by Friedrich W.J.C. Kolb. Our Onyx journal pays homage to the harmonious blend of art and science, reminiscent of the intricate bindings that once held Latin orations on the physiology of plants by the renowned Dutch botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese. De Vriese, a member of the Royal Dutch Institute of Sciences, Literature, and Fine Arts, played a pivotal role in naming numerous species of plants within the Asterales order (Asterids). Throughout Dutch history, science and art have intertwined, with Dutch artists pioneering the art of still life. It is therefore no surprise that this significant binding, with its rich heritage, finds its place in the KB, National Library of the Netherlands. Established in 1798, the library's mission is to celebrate the written word and showcase Dutch creativity and innovation to the world. We are thrilled to partner with the KB, National Library to introduce this exquisite binding to the Paperblanks collection.
