The US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 brought about the collapse of the Ba'athist state, yet the citizens of Basra managed to establish predictable routines and social order amidst the chaos. How did they achieve this? The answer lies in the Friday mosque.
A week after the regime fell, Shii imams reintroduced Friday congregational prayers and associated sermons in most places since the 1950s. These sermons played a crucial role in spreading common knowledge and coordination, both locally and nationally, contributing to the emergence of a cohesive imagined community of Iraqi Shia that would dominate Iraq's political order.
In his book, "Order out of Chaos," David Siddhartha Patel combines rational choice approaches, ethnographic understanding, and GIS analysis to explore the interconnectedness of the problem of creating social order in a stateless environment, the origins and limits of political authority and leadership, and the social and political significance of collective identity.
The Friday mosque became a symbol of unity and resilience for the people of Basra, providing a sense of structure and purpose in the face of uncertainty. It served as a gathering place for community members to come together, pray, and share their experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and collective identity.
The sermons delivered by the Shii imams during these prayers were particularly influential in shaping the collective identity of the Iraqi Shia community. They emphasized the importance of unity, loyalty, and obedience to the religious leaders, which helped to solidify the community's sense of identity and cohesion.
Furthermore, the Friday mosque played a role in promoting social order by providing a platform for community leaders to address issues and grievances. The imams acted as mediators and arbiters, helping to resolve conflicts and promote peace within the community.
The book "Order out of Chaos" offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of state collapse and the resilience of communities in the face of adversity. It sheds light on the role of institutions and social structures in shaping social order and the importance of collective identity in maintaining stability and order.
