Our mothers play a powerful role in making us the kind of people we are, and this book explores the social sources of human sex roles, including the universal precedence of males over females in all known societies.

This book makes a forceful assertion and thoroughly examines a common observation about all of us: our mothers have a significant impact on shaping who we are. Virtually all children have learned to walk, talk, eat, sleep, control bodily functions, interact with others, be male, or be female by the age of three, four, or five, insofar as these skills are learned, from their mothers (or a female mother surrogate). Every mother is aware of this. The author claims that most social analysts, both know this and choose to ignore it. If our mothers have an asymmetrical influence on our early years, while our fathers typically play a supporting role, what does this reveal about the social origins of human sex roles, including the universal precedence of males over females in all known societies? These are profound, normative, and frequently deeply emotional issues. Professor Levy aims to approach them in a scientific spirit, clear the way for better understandings of the role of mothers, and inspire new research on early socialization. This title is part of UC Press' Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press' mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
