  • More about Out of School: Information Art and the Toronto School of Communication

Out of School explores the long history of information art associated with the Toronto School of Communication, highlighting the perspectives of artists inspired by Marshall McLuhan and colleagues and the philosophical underpinnings of the school's ideas about information. It uses pre-Internet media to materialize visionary concepts of information without computers, and recontextualizes this philosophy of information in relation to quantitative discourses and methodologies. It also highlights instances where information art was able to carve out spaces of agency and resistance, broadening the network of practitioners connected to the school to include visual artists active both within and beyond Canada.

Out of School is a comprehensive exploration of the long history of information art associated with the Toronto School of Communication, delving into the perspectives of artists inspired by Marshall McLuhan's speculations and the philosophical underpinnings of the Toronto School's ideas about information. Through pre-Internet media such as telex and the telecopier, these artists materialized visionary concepts of information without the aid of computers, becoming harbingers of contemporary digital culture. Art historian Adam Lauder recontextualizes this qualitative philosophy of information in relation to quantitative discourses and methodologies, making visible the ways in which creative figures make art that operates at the interface between art and business. While exploring how utopian information ontologies struggled to account for markers of identity and difference, including Indigeneity, gender, and sexual diversity, the book also highlights instances when information art was able to carve out spaces of agency and resistance. By broadening the network of practitioners connected to the school to include visual artists active both within and beyond Canada, Out of School proposes that artists made significant contributions to theory in their own right.
