  • More about Oxford and South Midland Buses

Oxford has had an excellent and dynamic transport system, with City of Oxford Motor Services (COMS) as its established bus operator. Under National Bus Company ownership, South Midland operations were added, and the name was changed to Oxford South Midland. This book also looks at other operators running in the county and neighbouring counties, such as the Stagecoach Group. Photographs included here were captured between 1986 and 2010.

Oxford serves as a remarkable and successful example of deregulation in the bus and coach industry, functioning almost flawlessly in textbook fashion. This historic city, renowned for its prestigious university colleges and iconic 'dreaming spires,' had City of Oxford Motor Services (COMS) as its established bus operator. Under the ownership of the National Bus Company, South Midland's operations were integrated, leading to the name change to Oxford South Midland. Prior to privatization, South Midland took charge of the county depots, while Oxford retained the city and interurban network. However, both entities continued to operate coach services to London via the M40 motorway or along the Thames Valley. This book also explores a selection of other operators operating in the county and neighboring counties such as Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. The Stagecoach Group significantly expanded its presence in the area, with photographs included in this publication spanning from 1986 to 2010. These photographs showcase a wide range of vehicle types, liveries, and operators, providing a visual representation of the transportation landscape during this period.
