- More about Pastoralism: making variability work
Pastoral systems have evolved to function with the natural environment and use variability in inputs to reduce variability in outputs. The Pastoralist Knowledge Hub has helped create an institutional space for connecting and coordinating work on pastoralism within FAO, and an Inter-Departmental Working Group on Pastoralism has been formed.

Pastoral systems have undergone remarkable evolution to adapt seamlessly to the ever-changing natural environment. Recognizing the inherent variability as a vital component, this paper endeavors to achieve two primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to engage the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the mainstreaming of pastoralism by fostering a comprehensive understanding of pastoralism and its systematic integration into FAO's regular operations. Secondly, it presents a compelling evidence-based narrative on pastoralism, tailored to a specialized audience.
Two fundamental points are emphasized throughout this document. Firstly, pastoral systems stand as a testament to farming in harmony with nature. Secondly, pastoral systems harness the variability inherent in inputs, such as the environment, by matching it with variability in their own operational processes. This includes elements such as flexibility in movements, animal breeds, and labor force, among others. By strategically aligning these variables, pastoral systems aim to minimize the variability in outputs, encompassing aspects such as animal production, health, household food security, and more.
Since 2015, the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub (PKH) has played a pivotal role in creating an institutional framework for fostering collaboration and coordination in the field of pastoralism within FAO. As a result, an Inter-Departmental Working Group on Pastoralism has been established, bringing together experts from various departments within FAO. The conceptual framework of this paper, as well as early versions, has benefited greatly from the valuable input and guidance provided by FAO staff and esteemed specialists in pastoralism from around the world.
In conclusion, pastoral systems have evolved to thrive in the dynamic interplay between nature and human endeavors. By recognizing the significance of variability and engaging FAO in its mainstreaming, this paper aims to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future for pastoral communities and the broader agricultural landscape.
