Barend Hendrik Thier, a Dutch landscape painter of the late 18th century, has been almost completely forgotten. However, a recent discovery has brought him back into the limelight, making him the 18th century Dutch artist for whom we have the greatest number of sketchbooks. This fortunate discovery reveals a completely new side to his work, showcasing a more intimate and spontaneous approach to nature than his finished drawings for the market. The sketchbook formerly in the Rothschild collection is perhaps the finest testimony to his art as a landscape painter, distinguished by his ability to capture and render the variations of light in the Dutch countryside. The 70 pages of the carnet, in portrait format, are also used horizontally, in double pages, to depict mainly the surroundings of Leiden, but there are also sketches of birds and natural landscapes.
Thier's work has been largely overlooked in the past, but this discovery has shed light on a previously unknown chapter of his artistic journey. The twelve intact sketchbooks that have been attributed to him provide a unique insight into his creative process and offer a deeper understanding of his artistic vision. These sketchbooks, which were previously in the Rothschild collection, showcase his talent for capturing the essence of nature in a spontaneous and intimate manner. The carnet's portrait format allows for a detailed depiction of the surroundings of Leiden, while also showcasing his ability to capture the beauty of birds and natural landscapes.
Barend Hendrik Thier's resurgence in the art world is a testament to the power of discovery and the enduring value of his work. His ability to capture the beauty of the Dutch countryside in his sketchbooks has earned him a place in the annals of 18th-century Dutch art history. The discovery of these twelve intact sketchbooks has opened up a new perspective on his artistic journey, and it is hoped that further research will shed more light on his life and work.
