Samuel Pepys' Library, renowned during his lifetime and even more so today, was bequeathed to Magdalene College, the institution he attended in the 1650s. After a long journey, the library finally reached its destination in 1724, finding a splendid new home within a beautiful building. This remarkable collection boasts an impressive array of approximately 3,000 items, showcasing a diverse range of treasures. Among them are medieval manuscripts, early printed books by Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde, a naval collection that reflects Pepys' role as Secretary to the Admiralty, works by his contemporaries and members of the Royal Society, including Isaac Newton's renowned Principia Mathematica, and an unparalleled collection of ephemera, including letters, playbills, and invitations.
In addition to the Pepys Library, Magdalene boasts an impressive historic collection housed in the enchanting Old Library rooms. This collection has evolved over nearly 500 years through a series of significant benefactions and the regular acquisition of books for the use of students and scholars. The Old Library houses a treasure trove of medieval manuscripts, incunabula, prints, and papers, as well as the ancient records of the college.
The combination of the Pepys Library and the Old Library at Magdalene College creates a unique and invaluable cultural heritage, providing a glimpse into the past and fostering scholarly research and exploration. These remarkable collections continue to captivate visitors and scholars alike, contributing to the rich tapestry of intellectual and historical heritage of the institution.
