This comprehensive book offers a thorough exploration of the field of peace research, penned by an author with over fifty years of experience in the field. It provides a unique perspective on the emergence of peace research in Sweden, as the author played a pivotal role in the most significant events during this formative period. The book also showcases how the discipline has evolved from its initial focus on "alternatives to war" to a comprehensive study of the various dimensions of a "lasting and positive peace".

The author's own work encompasses a wide range of topics, including the causes of war, sanctions, conflict resolution, conflict data, mediation, and quality peace. Through their demonstration of the diverse range of issues that must be understood for a peace of quality, they exemplify the breadth of knowledge required. This is further highlighted by a selection of the author's writings, both previously published and original to this volume, as well as accounts of their involvement in actual peace processes in the 1990s.

This publication makes a substantial contribution to understanding the evolution of peace research as a field and is essential reading for scholars, policy makers, journalists, students, and anyone aspiring to be a peace researcher, as well as the general public.

Peter Wallensteen, a renowned global pioneer in peace research, is credited with establishing the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, which is considered a major center in the field. He served as the Head of Department from 1972 to 1999. Peter Wallensteen also founded and directed the renowned Uppsala Conflict Data Program, UCDP, a global resource for the study of armed conflicts and peace negotiations, from 1978 to 2015. He was the inaugural holder of the Dag Hammarskjöld Chair in Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, from 1985 to 2012.
