Margaret Cavendish (1623–1673) is a captivating figure who is garnering increasing attention among philosophers, and for a good reason. She is an intriguing advocate of a vitalist tradition emphasizing the inherent activity of matter and its inherent perceptive faculties. Moreover, she serves as an ideal character to introduce students (and their teachers) to a different seventeenth century and a distinct cast of philosophical characters. This book is an excellent resource for classroom use.

The Philosophical Letters (1664) offers us Cavendish's perspective on what was fascinating and significant in the philosophical world at that time, a view of philosophy as it was during that era by an active participant. Few documents in the history of philosophy can match its significance. Deborah Boyles Introduction provides a highly accessible summary of Cavendish's natural philosophy, as well as excellent introductions to the other figures she discusses in the book. Boyles annotations are not extensive, but they greatly assist in guiding the student toward an informed reading of the texts.
