Platon, a renowned portraitist, has dedicated fifteen years to visually capturing and documenting human rights movements across the globe, from Cairo to the Congo. His work, showcased in The Defenders, comprises five photo essays spanning a significant period of time. In Burma, Platon captured portraits of monks, sex workers, former child soldiers, and the controversial political leader Aung San Suu Kyi. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, he was on the ground in Cairo, documenting the demands of the people for the resignation of Hosni Mubarak. In Russia, he documented dissidents who had faced oppressive governments. Along the US-Mexico border, he documented the victims of inhumane immigration policies. The chapter on the Congo delves into the ongoing trauma of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Platon's photographs are accompanied by short texts that provide contextual information and retell his own stories of shooting on location. The book also includes a poster.
