From the nineteenth century to the present day, The Portuguese at War provides an overview of the conflicts, wars, and revolutions in which Portugal has been involved. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the French invasions, civil wars, African Empire, decolonization wars, World War I belligerence, World War II neutrality, Atlantic Alliance participation, and peacekeeping operations in Kosovo, East Timor, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.

The book addresses the military interventions in politics and the role of Portugal's political regimes in military reform. It explores the transition from the Liberal Revolutions to the Republic, the military dictatorship and authoritarian regime, the 25th of April Revolution, and the transition to democracy.

Portugal's war involvement is closely linked to international and European circumstances, as well as internal factors such as the economy, society, public opinion, and political/military power. A historical perspective must consider the military institutions in place at the time, including recruitment systems, social composition, organization of the army, navy, and air force, military ethos, equipment, weapons, and military technologies, strategic military doctrine, and war outcomes.

Special attention is given to the effects of international isolation after the Estado Novo and post-Cold War Europeanization. The book does not eschew the plurality of interpretative theories but seeks to combine historical accuracy with a highly readable literary narrative that is accessible to undergraduate and research levels, as well as a broader audience.

The Portuguese at War offers a comprehensive and insightful examination of Portugal's military history, providing a valuable contribution to the field of military studies.
