After World War II, the triumph of multilateralism led to the establishment of several international organizations, including two that would play a significant role in providing external funding to the Portuguese economy in the second half of the twentieth century and the early twenty-first century. The European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have been instrumental in providing substantial financial support to Portugal, both during periods of economic growth and during financial crises. This contributory volume offers a comprehensive analysis of specific case studies, including the Marshall Plan (1949-1952), the three IMF interventions (in the 1970s, 1980s, and the 2011 bailout), the implementation of the first EU funds received by Portugal prior to its accession, and the debate surrounding the new framework for European funds for the period 2021-2027. These case study analyses provide an overview of the legal, economic, and financial implications of such external funding on Portugal at different times and in different economic contexts.

Of particular importance at all times is the public finance legal framework, particularly in the context of the new European funding structures, which have attracted some criticism. Furthermore, the implications of any future IMF financial assistance and its political implementation are of utmost concern.

Portuguese Economic Development and External Funding in the Modern Era provides valuable insights into economic development, crisis management, financial assistance, and European investment funds. While the work focuses on the Portuguese economy, the topics investigated and the analytical methods employed are applicable to other countries as well. This is the first book to address economic development and external funding, and it is likely to serve as a template for future research in this field.
