This book investigates the relationships between economies of scale in food consumption and socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households, and proposes two theoretical models to rationalize the role of home-grown food and domestic technology in enhancing these economies. Econometric models are used to test the validity of the models, and adjusted poverty estimations are derived numerically using estimated equivalence scales. The methodology can be applied to other countries.

This comprehensive book delves into the intricate connections between economies of scale in food consumption and a diverse range of socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households, as well as their behavioral choices regarding food consumption. Given that food constitutes a significant portion of household expenditures for low-income households, this study aims to shed light on the factors that influence these consumption patterns. The characteristics under examination include household size, location, income, and gender of the household head. On the other hand, the behavioral choices considered encompass the decision to consume home-grown food and the adoption of domestic technology to facilitate food preparation and consumption.
To provide a theoretical framework for understanding these relationships, the book presents two compelling theoretical models. These models aim to explain the role of consuming home-grown food and utilizing domestic technology in enhancing economies of scale in food consumption. To validate these models and empirically test their validity, econometric models are employed. Additionally, adjusted poverty estimations are derived numerically using the estimated equivalence scales. While the data used for applying these techniques are derived from four Household Income and Expenditure Surveys conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) in Sri Lanka, the methodology is adaptable to similar analyses in other countries.
In conclusion, this book offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics between economies of scale in food consumption, socio-economic factors, and demographic characteristics of households. By examining these relationships, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders can develop strategies and policies that promote sustainable and equitable food systems, particularly for vulnerable populations.
