In October 2021, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church released its report, detailing a consistent disregard for survivors and a callous and horrifying "lack of outrage" from bishops and other Catholic leaders. However, this report fails to tell the story of the priests who themselves are survivors of clerical abuse and their struggles.

At the age of forty-eight, Patrick C. Goujon, SJ, suddenly remembered what a priest had done to him for four long years, beginning when he was seven years old. Locked in denial for almost forty years, he finally spoke out, hoping to heal. Yet, his entire life began to fall apart. He questioned why his memory had been suppressed for so long and asked himself, "How could I have chosen to become a priest myself?"

In his memoir, Precarious, Goujon shares the story of how he learned to survive the shock of this revelation and to live as a believer. His journey is a healing one, and he finds support in spirituality to recover from child abuse.

Goujon's story is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of seeking help and support when facing trauma. It highlights the need for transparency and accountability within the Catholic Church and the broader society to address the issue of clerical abuse and provide survivors with the resources they need to heal.

As Goujon's story continues to unfold, it is hoped that more priests will come forward to share their own experiences and that the Catholic Church will take steps to address the issue of clerical abuse and prevent it from happening in the future.
