  • More about Preference Hierarchy Model of Same-Turn Repair Operations in Talk-In-Interaction

This book explores four self-initiated same-turn repair strategies in talk-in-interaction, proposing a preference hierarchy model of repair operations based on a Hungarian corpus and previous research on nine languages. It reinterprets the relationship between intersubjectivity and progressivity in talk-in-interaction, suggesting a two-way relationship between the two principles. The possible choices of repair operations depend on factors such as the function of repair operations, the number of respects in which they override the preference for progressivity, and the morphosyntactic structure of the language used. The author attempts to show how other methods can enhance the reliability of the results.

This book delves into a comprehensive exploration of four self-initiated same-turn repair strategies in talk-in-interaction, namely, recycling, replacement, insertion, and aborting. Through a rigorous analysis of a Hungarian corpus, as well as previous findings on nine other languages, a preference hierarchy model of repair operations is proposed, capable of interpreting these operations relative to each other. This model reinterprets the interplay between the principles of intersubjectivity and progressivity in talk-in-interaction, suggesting that the principle of maintaining progressivity also influences the principle of maintaining intersubjectivity (not solely vice versa). It posits a two-way relationship between intersubjectivity and progressivity.

The study reveals that the speakers' choices of repair operations related to self-repair are influenced by at least three factors: the function of repair operations, the extent to which they override the preference for progressivity, and the morphosyntactic structure of the language employed. This research underscores the intricate interplay between grammar and pragmatics. While the book draws upon the theoretical framework of conversation analysis, the author endeavors to demonstrate how other methods can complement and enhance the reliability of the findings. By employing a diverse range of methodologies, the book aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities of same-turn repair strategies in talk-in-interaction.
