Pressing Matters 9

Pressing Matters 9 is an Open Source publication that presents the Department of Architecture's concept of design research, an integral approach of critical thinking, rigorous research, and a deep understanding of the complex layers of architecture. It was developed in collaboration with Jonathan Jackson of the renowned design Studio WSDIA in NYC and focuses on an in-depth representation of how expertise and content from courses have been integrated into Design Studios. The Department also launched the one-year MSDRAS program, directed by Assistant Professor Robert Stuart Smith, which aims to critically develop novel approaches to the design, manufacturing, construction, use, and lifecycle of architecture through creative engagement with robotics, material systems, and design computation.

This year, "Pressing Matters 9" underwent a complete transformation, with the primary objective of presenting an Open Source publication that encapsulates the Department of Architecture's concept of design research. Collaborating with Jonathan Jackson, the esteemed design Studio WSDIA in New York City, a more holistic design was developed, fostering input from research [ARI labs], students, faculty, and the vibrant events at Penn. The content and layout of "Pressing Matters 9" are meticulously crafted to provide an in-depth exploration of how the Department has seamlessly integrated expertise and content from its courses into its Design Studios in recent years.

The Department also launched its one-year Master of Science in Design: Robotics and Autonomous Systems (MSDRAS) program this year, under the direction of Assistant Professor Robert Stuart Smith. This program aims to critically cultivate innovative approaches to the design, manufacturing, construction, use, and lifecycle of architecture by engaging creatively with robotics, material systems, and design computation. Students will acquire advanced skills in advanced forms of robotic fabrication, simulation, and artificial intelligence, empowering them to develop methodologies for design that harness production or live adaptation as a creative opportunity.

"Pressing Matters 9" serves as a valuable addition to the existing Master of Science in Design (MSD) programs offered by the Department. These programs include the MSDEBD, directed by Professor Bill Braham, and the MSDAAD, directed by Professor Ali Rahim. The comprehensive coverage of these programs in "Pressing Matters 9" showcases the Department's commitment to advancing design education and pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation.
