This volume pays tribute to the illustrious career of Dr. Preston King, an esteemed African American political philosopher with a global reputation. King's academic journey commenced with his first degree from Fisk University in 1956. He then proceeded to the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), where he completed his Master of Science (Economics) in 1958 with a Mark of Distinction. During his time at LSE, he was fortunate to be mentored by renowned professors such as Sir Karl Popper, Michael Oakeshott, and Dr. Bernard Crick.

However, a clash with Jim Crow America led to King's exile for the next forty years. Despite this setback, he continued to pursue his academic pursuits, taking up lectureships at various universities across the globe. His academic career included positions at the universities of Keele, Ghana, and Sheffield, where he served as a Senior Research Assistant at the Acton Society Trust in London. He later assumed the role of professor at the universities of Nairobi, New South Wales (Sydney), and Lancaster, before finally returning to the United States as the joint Woodruff Professor at Emory and Distinguished Professor at Morehouse.

The essays included in this volume are written by renowned scholars from around the world. They explore three fundamental themes that run throughout Preston King's extensive body of work: history, tolerance, and friendship. The first third of the book focuses on essays on time and history, with insightful contributions from Professors Browning, Lawson, Moore, and Cherribi. The second third delves into essays on time and toleration, offering memorable and penetrating analyses by Professors Jones, Read, Modood/ Dobbernak, and Brown. The final third explores essays on time and friendship, with charming and insightful offerings by Professors Devere, Smith, and Coleman.

To conclude, this volume serves as a celebration of Dr. Preston King's remarkable career. It provides a comprehensive overview of his intellectual contributions and sheds light on the enduring themes that have shaped his philosophical outlook. The essays included in this volume are a testament to the depth and breadth of King's philosophical inquiry and his ability to engage with some of the most pressing issues of our time.
