Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan, born in 1663 in France but with an Italian mother, was initially destined for a religious career. However, he fled France as a young man and chose a life as a soldier. In 1683, he entered the service of the Habsburg Emperor Leopold I and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the greatest military commanders of his time. He played a significant role in the wars against the Ottoman Turks and the French, notably commanding the Imperial army in the victorious battles of Zenta in 1697 and Blenheim in 1704, alongside John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Eugene's military genius was evident during the siege of Vienna in 1683, where he thwarted the Ottoman Turkish threat to Western Europe. He also commanded the Imperial army in the decisive victory over the Ottomans at Zenta in 1697. His most famous achievement was his alliance with Marlborough in the defeat of the French at Blenheim in 1704, followed by victories at Oudenarde and Malplaquet. His triumph over the Ottomans at the capture of Belgrade in 1717 further solidified his reputation as a great captain. Despite his lifelong bachelor status, Eugene was known for his hard-bitten military skills and his diplomatic abilities, as well as his support for the arts. His summer palace, The Belvedere in Vienna, stands as a testament to his extraordinary life and achievements.
