In the year 2182, citizens of a dying Earth flee to a distant promised land in a massive colony ship, the Arka III. They do not reach their intended destination, but instead find themselves in a starless, seemingly endless void. The Arka project, a massive vessel bound for the distant planet of Leonis, has taken much longer than the planned two hundred years, and the passengers have awakened to find themselves in a mysterious and dangerous world.

Eric Rives, the ships second-in-command, and his partner Jia Tang are sent on an exploratory mission to investigate the dark labyrinth that surrounds them. What they find is beyond belief: a massive pyramid-like structure that seems to be the source of all life in the universe. As they delve deeper into the pyramid, they discover a civilization that has been around for millions of years, and that has a profound knowledge of the universe and its mysteries.

Romain Benassaya, a young French space opera novelist, adapts his own 2018 novel, Pyramides, for the first time in English. The novel features lushly illustrative art by Joan Urgell, and is praised for its imaginative and exciting storytelling. Benassaya's novel is in line with the great novels of the genre, such as Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke and Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

The author lets us imagine a much larger universe, which we could populate at will. A true science fiction phenomenon, the novel is filled with mystery, promise, and charismatic characters. The human is at the heart of the plot, and the extraterrestrials are credible and surprising. Lorkhan and the Bad Kind is a frantic storytelling that features twists, cliffhangers, and a steady pace. Worthy of a great cinematographic series, the novel places the human at the heart of the plot and features charismatic characters that are quite mistreated.
