  • More about Promised Land, The: Universalism and a Coming World State

During a visit to Jordan, Nicholas Hagger stood on Mount Nebo, where the prophet Moses stood, and looked down on the Promised Land of Canaan. He reflects on his Universalism and traces its development, concluding that a coming democratic, partly federal World State has the authority to abolish war, enforce disarmament, combat famine, disease, and poverty, and solve the world's financial, environmental, and virological problems.

During a visit to Jordan, Nicholas Hagger stood atop Mount Nebo, the same place where the prophet Moses had gazed upon the Promised Land of Canaan shortly before his passing. It was as if all the kingdoms of the earth lay spread out beneath him, a new Promised Land, a vision of a future World State called for by figures such as Dante, Kant, Truman, Einstein, Churchill, Eisenhower, Gandhi, Russell, J.F. Kennedy, and Gorbachev, as well as Hagger himself in his works like World State and World Constitution. Hagger's journey combines travelogue and historical reflection, drawing on his previous visits to the Biblical Middle East and tracing the evolution of his Universalism during his formative years and later in his "wilderness years," when he spent 40 years in the wilderness, spreading Universalism through 60 books and ultimately arriving at its ten commandments. In his reflections, Hagger considers a remarkable life and its pattern, drawing conclusions about the Providential nature of its direction and the European civilization. Through his wanderings in Arabia and Egypt, his past travels, and his writings, Hagger presents a visionary idea of a coming democratic, partly federal World State with the authority to abolish war, enforce disarmament, combat famine, disease, and poverty, and solve the world's financial, environmental, and virological problems. In a closing vision, he envisions a Promised Land that, like Moses, he will not live to see. This is a stunning work with a prophetic vision of the future.
