The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is presenting an exhibition titled Public Parks,Private Gardens, which explores the relationship between the 19th-century horticultural revolution in France and the works of great Romantic, Impressionist, and early modern artists. The exhibition, which features over 100 works of art, including paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures, is curated by Colta Ives, a distinguished art historian and trained landscape designer. The horticultural revolution of the 19th century transformed the landscape of France, creating a network of tree-lined boulevards and public parks that provided green spaces for the city's crowded, displaced urban dwellers. At the same time, suburbanites and country-dwellers began cultivating their own flower gardens, inspired by the new landscape. As public engagement with gardening grew, artists increasingly featured flowers and parks in their work.

The exhibition includes masterworks by artists such as Bonnard, Cassatt, Cézanne, Corot, Daumier, Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, Monet, and Seurat. Many of these artists were themselves avid gardeners, and they painted parks and gardens as the distinctive scenery of contemporary life. Colta Ives provides new insights not only into these essential works, but also into this extraordinarily creative period in France's history.

The exhibition is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from March 12, 2018, to July 29, 2018. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Admission is free for members and $25 for non-members.
