When a wounded man arrives at Sir Tobias, the Coroner of Dorset, bearing distressing news about his son-in-law, he is compelled to embark on an investigation for the sake of his daughter and grandson. Matthias Barton, drawn into the case, travels to Calais in search of answers. Alongside William, the squire to Sir Tobias, they uncover a sinister organization aimed at weakening the English soldiers in their ongoing battle against the French. Meanwhile, in Sherborne, tensions escalate, and a fire in the Abbey unveils a gruesome discovery. Matthias must gather his wits to unravel this peculiar affair, the second installment in a series of medieval mysteries featuring the young schoolmaster Matthias Barton, set against the backdrop of Sherborne and its surrounding area.

The characters in the book are well-developed, and the reader can easily connect with them. The main characters, Matthias Barton, and William, squire, are particularly compelling, and I hope there will be a sequel in the future to further explore their stories. I have grown to like Matthias Barton and wish him well in his endeavors.

The book's historical setting in Sherborne adds an extra layer of intrigue and authenticity. The author has done a commendable job of researching and incorporating historical details into the narrative, making the book feel more immersive and engaging. The reader is transported back to the medieval era and can appreciate the social and political dynamics of the time.

Overall, this is a solid read for anyone who enjoys medieval mysteries and historical fiction. The author has created a compelling story with well-developed characters, and the historical setting adds depth and richness to the narrative. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable and informative read.
