  • More about Quentin Blake - A Year of Drawings

Quentin Blake is an illustrator who has been working increasingly in sequences of drawings. During the lockdowns, he had more time to explore his visual interests and go wherever his imagination took him. This book is an edited selection of over 3,000 drawings produced from March 2020 to February 2021, providing a unique insight into what happens when a great artist is left to his own devices.

In recent years, I have delved deeper into a captivating realm of artistic exploration, immersing myself in a series of drawings that delve into subjects and techniques that ignite my curiosity. These sequences manifest in diverse approaches and tones, oscillating between reality and fantasy. Yet, my overarching aspiration is for each of these sequences to resonate with individuals who cherish the art of drawing, captivating their hearts and minds in unique ways.

Quentin Blake, like many illustrators, operates in a solitary realm. In the ordinary course of things, he would undertake two daily journeys to his office, situated across the square from his residence, to attend to any pending business. However, during the lockdowns, these distractions and time constraints were absent. Quentin found himself with an abundance of time to delve into his visual interests and let his imagination soar unrestrained.

Some of these series were sketched even before sunrise, while he remained nestled in bed. The choice of medium for each series was partly determined by the materials readily available to him—whether it was a pencil, a biro, or Sennelier oil pastels. Similarly, the size, color, and quality of the paper were contingent upon what was at hand.

This book presents an edited selection of over 3,000 drawings that Quentin created from March 2020 to February 2021. It serves as a captivating portfolio, showcasing his personal artistic endeavors that were not commissioned and were not intended for public dissemination. These drawings offer a singular glimpse into the extraordinary creative process that unfolds when a great artist is left to his own devices.
