Anishinaabe culture and storytelling collide with the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland in this captivating coming-of-age graphic novel. Aimée, a non-binary Anishinaabe middle-schooler, embarks on a class trip to offer gifts to the Paayehnsag, the water spirits believed to safeguard the land. Amidst tales of these protective spirits and the looming threat of development, Aimée finds solace in daydreaming, distancing themselves from the bullying and isolation they've faced since embracing their non-binary identity. However, their reverie is abruptly shattered when they accidentally wander off, finding themselves transported to an alternate dimension. Here, they encounter traditional Anishinaabe figures, drawn inspiration from the iconic Alice in Wonderland tale.
To navigate their way back home, Aimée is enlisted by Trickster, the mischievous spirit, to hunt down dark water spirits with the guidance of Paayehnsag. Along their journey, Aimée faces formidable adversaries, including the land-grabbing Queen and her robotic guards. With each challenge, the odds seem stacked against them. However, Aimée's determination and resilience shine through, as they confront the dark water spirits and fight for their rightful place in the world.
Illustrated by KC Oster with a modern twist on their own Ojibwe style and cultural representation, Rabbit Chase is a tale of self-discovery, community, and finding one's place in the vast tapestry of existence. Through Aimée's journey, readers are invited to explore the complexities of identity, the power of resilience, and the importance of standing up for what is right. This graphic novel offers a fresh perspective on familiar themes, reminding us of the rich heritage and resilience of Indigenous cultures while providing a captivating and thought-provoking narrative.
