  • More about RAF Training Command: A Pictorial History

During World War II, Air Commodore Tedder recognized the need for improved training for RAF pilots, leading to the formation of RAF Training Command in 1936. The command faced training and logistical challenges, but persevered until it was separated into Flying Training Command and Technical Training Command in 1940. It was later re-established and absorbed into RAF Support Command in 1977.

When the expansion of the Royal Air Force (RAF) commenced in 1934, Air Commodore Tedder noted that the existing system of school training not only failed to produce operational competence but also left a significant amount of work for the operational squadrons to accomplish. Consequently, they could only achieve a passable level of military efficiency after a challenging struggle. He proposed to enhance the standards of school instruction to ensure that pilots exited the facility as operationally competent pilots, albeit at the cost of extending the training period and revising the syllabus.

Against this somewhat sorry backdrop of training and logistical challenges, as well as the looming clouds of war, the decision was made on May 1, 1936, to establish a new RAF Training Command. This organization was derived from the remnants of the former RAF Inland Area. This book will recount the story of RAF Training Command, from its inception on May 1, 1936, until it was divided into Flying Training Command and Technical Training Command on May 27, 1940. Subsequently, both commands were transferred into the newly re-established RAF Training Command on June 1, 1968, and then absorbed into RAF Support Command on June 13, 1977.
