  • More about Railroads of Wyoming

Before Wyoming became an official part of the United States, the Wyoming Territory played a significant role in the westward expansion of the country. In 1862, the Union Pacific constructed the first transcontinental railroad into the area, which was bound for a meeting with the Central Pacific in Utah in 1869. This 'Overland Route' has been modernized and is now a bustling transportation hub, with trains thundering across the state on main lines destined for California and the Pacific Northwest.

More recently, Wyoming's expansive Powder River Basin has provided enormous amounts of coal tonnage for both UP/Chicago & North Western and Burlington Northern/BNSF. While it may appear that this coal traffic has peaked, there are still plenty of trains to be seen moving out of the basin. Additionally, BNSF has a secondary main line that traverses through some extraordinary scenery as it heads north and west toward connections in Montana.

Overall, railroads crossing the magnificent Rocky Mountains and High Plains of Wyoming are a sight to behold for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature.
