The current economic models fail to recognize the rapidly worsening crisis that we are facing, perpetuating and often exacerbating vast and detrimental inequalities between individuals and countries. These models are unsustainable, particularly at a time when global temperatures are rising and divisions are deepening. As a result, humanity finds itself in a rapidly deteriorating situation, driven by its own actions, leading to the destruction of the living world and the rendering of significant portions of Earth uninhabitable.

Without access to the knowledge, skills, or tools necessary to build a better future, local, national, and global economies will continue to struggle in addressing the interconnected challenges of systemic racism, gender inequalities, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the nature and climate emergency.

Across the world, economics students are uniting under the banner of the student movement, Rethinking Economics, to envision and create a better economics that can contribute to a world where all children, regardless of their gender, background, or birthplace, can thrive. This book, through over sixty interviews with students and professionals from marginalized identities and diverse global and historical research, highlights the ways in which the discipline currently falls short of its intended purpose and presents a vision for its diversification, decolonization, and democratization.

The struggle to reclaim economics is of paramount importance, as our futures hinge on its success. This book provides a comprehensive guide on how we can achieve this goal. It is closely aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, which aims to promote decent work and economic growth. By embracing the principles outlined in this book, we can work towards creating a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous world for all.
