This book delves into innovative radio-intelligence-based (RIS-based) smart radio techniques aimed at achieving high-quality channel links in cellular communications. Unlike traditional antenna arrays, it showcases three unique characteristics:
1. Built-in Programmable Configuration: The RIS features a programmable configuration, allowing for analog beamforming without the need for additional hardware or signal processing.
2. Simultaneous Reflecting and Transmitting: The RIS enables the control of incident signals to partially reflect and partially transmit through it, enhancing flexibility in signal transmission.
3. No Digital Processing Capability: Unlike traditional RF components, the RIS lacks digital processing capabilities to actively send signals or RF components. Consequently, novel channel estimation and communication protocols, joint digital and RIS-based analog beamforming schemes, and interference control via mixed reflection and transmission must be developed.
Furthermore, this book explores the integration of RIS into legacy communication systems, leveraging its ability to actively shape the propagation environment. RIS techniques are further investigated to achieve two types of wireless applications: RF sensing and localization.
In RF sensing, the influence of sensing objectives on wireless signal propagation can be recognized by receivers, enabling the identification of these objectives. Unlike traditional sensing techniques, RIS-aided sensing allows for active customization of wireless channels, generating a favorable massive number of independent paths interacting with the sensing objectives. Designing RIS-based sensing algorithms and optimizing RIS configurations is crucial for enhancing the performance of RF sensing systems.
For the second application, RIS-aided localization involves deploying an RIS between the transmitter and receiver. By leveraging the RIS's ability to shape the propagation environment, the location of the receiver can be accurately determined. This application finds applications in various fields, such as asset tracking, navigation, and surveillance.
In conclusion, this book presents novel RIS-based smart radio techniques that offer significant potential for improving channel links in cellular communications. By harnessing the unique characteristics of RIS, such as programmable configuration, simultaneous reflecting and transmitting, and no digital processing capability, researchers and practitioners can develop innovative solutions for RF sensing and localization applications. The integration of RIS into legacy communication systems provides opportunities for enhanced communication capabilities and improved efficiency.
