Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) had terrifying visions in 1913, which he recorded in his The Red Book. The Red Book Hours, by Jill Mellick, documents Jung's affinity with art as a means of personal insight and includes insights into his choices regarding media and technique and his careful design of environments. It also includes magnifications of the sketches from The Red Book and a selection of Jung's own pigments.

In 1913, psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and theorist Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) encountered profound visions, often haunting and terrifying. Yet, recognizing their immense potential value, he sought ways to foster and encourage these visionary experiences. Over a span of many years, Jung meticulously documented his insights in a series of small journals, supplemented with commentaries and transcribed them using calligraphy and intricate illuminations into a substantial, red, leather-bound volume, commonly referred to as The Red Book. Regrettably, Jung never published the Liber Novus, as he affectionately named this pivotal chapter of his oeuvre, and he left no explicit instructions for its final disposition. Consequently, The Red Book remained unpublished until recently.

The Red Book Hours serves as a complementary addition to the facsimile edition and English-language translation of The Red Book, published in 2009. It delves deeper into Jung's profound affinity with art as a means of personal insight. Psychologist and multimedia artist Jill Mellick has conducted extensive research into Jung's choices regarding media and technique, as well as the meticulous design of environments that facilitated his creative processes and allowed the flow of unconscious content. Her remarkable journey encompasses explorations of memory, serendipity, and science. The Red Book Hours presents a captivating interplay of texts and images, including magnified sketches from The Red Book and a selection of Jung's own pigments, which have never been seen before. This extraordinary publication offers a more comprehensive portrayal than ever before of the foundational psychoanalyst's profound experiences and the expressive manifestation of his rich inner world.
