The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns a 15th-century velvet dalmatic, which inspired our Velvet Dalmatic collection. It was woven on a special loom to create its soft texture and high pile, making it a luxury fabric of the Renaissance. The original panel was given to the museum in 1945 and is patterned with brocaded gilt metal thread in a seven-lobed shield outlined with teardrops, an artichoke-like botanical shape, and tiny floral patterns.

Our Velvet Dalmatic collection draws inspiration from a remarkable piece of a 15th-century velvet dalmatic, a tunic with wide sleeves worn as part of liturgical vestments and by British monarchs during coronation services. Velvets of this caliber were meticulously woven on a specialized loom, which produced two distinct thicknesses simultaneously to achieve their exquisitely soft texture and lofty pile. This intricate process made velvet one of the most sought-after luxury fabrics during the Renaissance. The original velvet panel reproduced here was generously donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the Rogers Fund in 1945. It was part of a pair once owned by Marczell von Nemes, a Hungarian art financier, collector, and dealer. This particular design showcases a captivating blend of brocaded gilt metal thread, intricately woven into a seven-lobed shield adorned with teardrops, an artichoke-like botanical shape, and delicate floral patterns.
