In the framework of the project "Papsturkunden des frühen und hohen Mittelalters" at the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, which is part of the overall organization of the Pius-Stiftung für Papsturkundenforschung, Klaus Herbers is leading the reworking of the Regesta Pontificum Romanorum. The third volume, which connects to the first two volumes, contains the Pontifikates of Sergius II. to Benedikt VIII. (from 844 to 1024). The papal contacts are systematically arranged in chronological order in concise Latin regesta. The number of entries for the approximately 180 years covered by the third volume has increased by more than 3500 through the refinement of the research history since the last edition in 1885. In addition to numerous new discoveries, greater attention has been paid to letters to the pope and narrative sources. The letters of Leo IV., Nicholas I., and, most notably, Johannes VIII., which were widely circulated, are now accompanied by the writings and actions of nearly unknown papal and antipapal figures. Council acts, as well as collections of letters and legal documents, have also been evaluated alongside the vitae of bishops and the most important historiography. A significant advancement was made through the bibliographic update. The regesta refer to the major modern editions and the debates surrounding the authenticity and dating of papal writings. Conjunctions and an initial register facilitate access.
