This book emphasizes the study of US Colombianidades, which challenges Latino/a/x studies by highlighting the rich diversity and similarities with other Latino/a/x groups. It offers a deep dive into issues such as racial, gender, sexual, and socioeconomic realities, representation in popular culture, interethnic relations, political participation, and transnational identity.

Format: Hardback
Length: 193 pages

Publisher: Springer International Publishing AG

This book delves into the unique experiences of US Colombians, challenging the notion of them as "the other Latinos." The editors of this special issue argue that studying US Colombianidades adds depth and complexity to Latino/a/x studies. Through a collection of engaging essays, this volume showcases the rich diversity of US Colombian communities while also highlighting their similarities and differences with other Latino/a/x groups. This volume employs innovative cultural studies and social sciences perspectives, along with interpretive theories, to explore pressing issues such as how racial, gender, sexual, and socioeconomic realities shape the US Colombian experience, the representation of US Colombians in popular culture, interethnic relations between Colombians and other Latina/o/xs, the political participation of Colombians in US electoral politics, Colombian transnational understandings of identity, and much more.

I would like to express my gratitude to the editors of this special issue: Lina Rincón, Johana Londoño, Jennifer Harford Vargas, and María Elena Cepeda, for curating a collection of articles that will undoubtedly inspire Latino/a/x studies scholars to broaden our understanding of Latinidades and pay attention to the ways in which a focus on US Colombianidades complicates and enriches our field.

This book was previously published in Latino Studies, Volume 18, Issue 3, September 2020.
