The University is a European institution of higher education that was established in the High and Late Middle Ages and has continued to exist to this day. As a corporation with papal and royal privileges, the medieval university had the right to self-government, which included the appointment of its own representatives. All senior positions were elected by vote, with the election of the rector as the leader of the entire voting process being the most important. The present work centers on the decision-making process when selecting a new university president. Here, classical university history is combined with new decision-theoretic approaches to gain insights into the decision-making process in university governance and thus open up a deeper understanding of the medieval university.
