  • More about Renewable Energy Technologies for Energy Efficient Sustainable Development

Bioenergy derived from biomass and waste resources has the potential to be a carbon-neutral energy source and prevent environmental pollution. This book discusses anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies, biomass pretreatment technologies, biogas and by-product production, downstream processing of anaerobic digestate, biochar production, integration of AD in biorefineries, and life cycle assessment of AD-based technologies.

Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 414 pages

Publisher: Springer Nature Switzerland AG

The depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the urgent need to address environmental degradation caused by the combustion of fossil fuels have propelled the scientific community to explore alternative renewable energy sources. Among the numerous available renewable energy options, bioenergy derived from biomass and waste resources holds immense potential to not only mitigate environmental pollution but also become a carbon-neutral energy source. Furthermore, the adaptability of this technology can facilitate the integration of new green products, alternative energy sources, and promote a circular economy that aims for zero waste. This book aims to bridge the existing knowledge gap in the field of bioenergy resources.

In the first two chapters, we provide an introduction to anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies and direct interspecies electron transfer in AD. The subsequent three chapters delve into biomass pretreatment technologies, aimed at enhancing the process efficiency. Chapters six to eight focus on the production of biogas and other by-products from specific waste streams, such as dairy, food, and agricultural solid waste. The following two chapters are dedicated to downstream processing of anaerobic digestate and biochar production.

In the next three chapters, we explore the integration of AD in biorefineries through bioelectrochemical systems, syngas fermentation, and electricity production. The final two chapters provide an in-depth analysis of life cycle assessments of AD-based technologies.

By delving into these topics, this book aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of bioenergy resources and their potential to contribute to a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
