This volume explores modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean, including non-written communication, written communication, and broader modes of communication. Contributions are arranged thematically in three groups, including ritual architecture, color in wall-paintings, warfare, and grave stelae. Linear B texts and archaeological data are used to explore the color palette used at Pylos, how people were represented diacritically, and how different qualities of time were expressed.

This volume presents a series of thoughtful reflections on modes of communication in the Bronze Age Aegean, drawing on papers presented at two round table workshops of the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology on "Technologies of Representation" and "Writing and Non-Writing in the Bronze Age Aegean." These workshops were designed to explore current developments in these interconnected research areas while also fostering a seamless blend of science-based and humanities-based approaches, as well as a distinction between written communication, particularly its content, and broader modes of communication. Contributions are organized thematically into three distinct groups. The first group primarily focuses on non-written communication, while the third group predominantly explores written communication. The second group blurs this somewhat arbitrary distinction. Within the first group, topics range from the representation of ritual architecture in the Knossos wall paintings, a re-interpretation of the Harvester Vase from Ayia Triada, the use of color in wall paintings at Late Bronze Age Pylos, the portrayal of depictions in other (lost) media through painted media, and re-readings of Aegean representations of warfare and the sequence of grave stelae at Mycenae. The second group delves deeper into the color palette used at Pylos, the representation of individuals through taste and smell, the expression of different qualities of time through both textual and material means, the roles of images in Aegean scripts, complemented by a Peircian analysis of early Cretan writing, and a consideration of the complementary relationship between (non-literate) sealing and (literate) writing practices. The third group encompasses a range of topics, from defining Aegean writing itself to the conte. These thoughtful reflections provide valuable insights into the diverse modes of communication employed in the Bronze Age Aegean, shedding light on the rich tapestry of cultural interactions and artistic expressions that characterized this ancient civilization.
