Greek and Roman gems depict animals, which have been overlooked with little academic study. This research examines the associations between animal depictions and gemstone types, discussing the significance of these changes. While animals have been a common feature on gemstones during the Greek and Roman periods, they have largely been overlooked in terms of focused academic study. In the present research, a comprehensive collection of Greek and Roman gems (intaglios) depicting animals has been selected. These gems are analyzed in detail to explore the various themes portrayed, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the significance of animal depictions on these engraved gems. The study examines the relationships between animal representations and the type of gemstone used, as well as the perceived qualities associated with each. It also discusses the differences in the representation of animals on gems compared to other larger media and raises questions about the significance of these changes.

Concluding the study, it is argued that the gems hold a deeper symbolism related to themes such as good luck, abundance, fertility, health, success, and victory. These motifs are believed to have the power to weaken hostile forces and symbolize nature's abundance and fertility, particularly when animals are depicted in conjunction with their offspring, grazing, or accompanied by fertility symbols like cornucopias, ears of corn, and wine goblets. Additionally, some animals are associated with specific gods and even embody their attributes, granting the owner of an engraved gem divine protection.

In summary, this research sheds light on the overlooked significance of animal motifs on Greek and Roman gems, revealing a rich tapestry of symbolism and meaning associated with these engraved artifacts. It highlights the importance of studying these gems to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and artistic traditions of the ancient world.
