Videos showcasing everyday indignities and harm towards Black or Brown consumers have become prevalent in the media, shedding light on the complex, risky, and traumatic experiences many shoppers encounter in retail, restaurants, and other marketplaces.
However, these incidents often fade from the media spotlight quickly. In her book, Retail Racism, Michelle Dunlap aims to provide a deeper understanding of the ongoing realities faced by ordinary Black and Brown individuals as they navigate this challenging environment. Through 19 in-depth interviews with consumers across the country, Dunlap seeks to ignite a broader conversation that engages readers and empowers them to intervene, disrupt, and improve the inappropriate and racialized treatment of consumers in America today.
Retail Racism goes beyond shopping and encompasses the broader aspects of humane living in America, including surviving and making sense of unfair experiences, understanding the appropriate responses, and considering the larger issues and contexts that shape the marketplace for Black and Brown people. A portion of the author's proceeds from book sales will be automatically donated to The Florida Education Fund (FEF), a non-profit organization established in 1984 to support educational opportunities and advancements.
