Based on author Sara Florence Davidson's childhood memories, this illustrated story captures the joy and adventure of a Haida fish camp. Every summer, a Haida girl and her family travel up the Yakoun River on Haida Gwaii, following the salmon. While their father fishes, the girl and her brother spend their time on the land playing and learning from Tsinii (Grandfather).
The girl and her brother would go exploring the forest, looking for berries and mushrooms to eat. They would also play games with the other children in the camp, such as tag and hide-and-seek.
One day, the girl and her brother were out fishing when they saw a group of whales swimming by. They were so amazed by the size and beauty of the whales that they decided to follow them.
The whales led them to a hidden cove where there was a large school of salmon. The girl and her brother watched in awe as the salmon swam around them, their scales shimmering in the sunlight.
After a while, the whales swam away, and the girl and her brother returned to the fish camp. They told everyone about their adventure, and the children were all excited to hear about it.
From that day on, the girl and her brother would always look forward to their summer trips to the Haida fish camp. They knew that they would never forget the joy and adventure that they had experienced there.
