This captivating book, originally published in 1977, delves into the two significant peasant revolts that took place in 1549, amidst the turbulent aftermath of Henry VIII's demise. The uprisings unveil a harsh backdrop of economic and social injustice, exacerbated by the prevailing inflation. In North Devon, the peasants rose in opposition to the imposition of the English Prayer Book, leading to a widespread rebellion as the local authorities became paralyzed, and the government vacillated between conciliation and repression. The rebellion gained momentum with the support of Cornishmen, who rallied to defend their national identity, assembling a formidable army that laid siege to Exeter. After three major battles, the revolt was ultimately suppressed.

In Norfolk, the peasants rose in protest against agrarian abuses, successfully routing a small royal force and occupying Norwich. Led by the astute Robert Kett, they expelled the gentry and governed the county on a platform of social justice until their efforts were thwarted by the forces released by the collapse of the other revolts. These revolts serve as a poignant testament to the deep-seated resentments and injustices experienced by the peasantry of the sixteenth century.
