This open-access book aims to develop an effective strategy for realizing a rice Green Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa, drawing upon over ten years of research conducted by research teams investigating the determinants and outcomes of new technology adoption in rice farming across seven countries in the region. Extensive statistical analyses are conducted using valuable household data collected from rice farmers. This book serves as a sequel to two earlier publications on the same subject, published by Springer and edited by K. Otsuka and D.F. Larson: "An African Green Revolution" in 2013 and "In Pursuit of an African Green Revolution" in 2016. The central message of the first book was that rice holds immense promise as a cereal crop in Sub-Saharan Africa due to the high transferability of Asian rice technology. Meanwhile, the second book emphasized the effectiveness of rice cultivation training programs in significantly increasing rice yields in the region. This third book expands its coverage in terms of topics, study periods, and study sites. It continues to showcase the substantial impacts of rice cultivation training on productivity, while also demonstrating the remarkable sustainability of these productivity gains and the existence of spillover effects from trainees to other farmers through the use of panel data. Furthermore, this book assesses the crucial role of mechanization in intensifying rice farming, the substantial returns associated with large-scale irrigation schemes, and the vital contribution of rice millers in enhancing the quality of milled rice. Based on these comprehensive studies, this book offers clear pathways toward achieving a full-fledged Green Revolution in rice farming in Sub-Saharan Africa.
