In 1965, Jay DeFeo's life took an unexpected turn when she was evicted from her apartment in San Francisco, along with her renowned painting, The Rose. The following morning, she faced the heartbreaking task of destroying her other artwork, an enormous painting on paper that had taken her six years to create. This unfinished masterpiece, known as Estocada, served as a shadowy counterpart to The Rose. However, destiny had other plans. Years later, in her studio, Estocada was reanimated through a series of artistic techniques, including photography, photocopying, collage, and relief.
Drawing from a wealth of unpublished archival material, Rip Tales delves into the intricate material history of Estocada, intertwining it with the stories of other Bay Area artists who share similar themes of transformation, intuition, and process. These artists include Zarouhie Abdalian, April Dawn Alison, Ruth Asawa, Lutz Bacher, Bruce Conner, Dewey Crumpler, Trisha Donnelly, and Vincent Fecteau.
What sets Rip Tales apart is its focus on a Bay Area ethos that resists being defined. The book explores the unpredictable edges of artworks and ideas, challenging the boundaries between art and life. It sheds light on the creative processes and inspirations that drive these artists, providing a unique perspective on the artistic landscape of the region.
Through its captivating narratives and rich visual imagery, Rip Tales invites readers to explore the depths of Jay DeFeo's life and artistic journey, as well as the broader tapestry of Bay Area artists who have left their mark on the world of art. It is a testament to the power of creativity and the enduring legacy of artistic expression.
