Hugh Despenser the Younger, who served as the king's chamberlain, favorite, and possibly lover, played a pivotal role in their ascent to power. Alongside his father, Hugh the Elder, the Despensers wielded substantial influence, but Hugh the Younger's greed and tyranny ultimately led to the downfall of a king and nearly brought about the destruction of his own family.
