The Despensers were a prominent English baronial family who achieved great prominence during the reign of Edward II (1307-27). Hugh Despenser the Younger, who served as the king's chamberlain, favorite, and possibly lover, played a pivotal role in their ascent to power. Alongside his father, Hugh the Elder, the Despensers wielded substantial influence, but Hugh the Younger's greed and tyranny ultimately led to the downfall of a king and nearly brought about the destruction of his own family.

Rise and Fall delves into the story of this intriguing family, spanning from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. During this time, three Despenser lords were beheaded, while two others fell in battle. The narrative begins with Hugh the justiciar, who died in rebellion against King Henry III and his son in 1265. It concludes with the execution of Thomas Despenser in 1400, following his attempt to free a deposed Richard II. Additionally, Thomas's posthumous daughter, Isabella, became a countess twice over and was the grandmother of Richard III's queen.

The Despensers, from their medieval portrayal as prime ministers to their (possible) involvement in romantic relationships with monarchs, held significant power in medieval England. Kathryn Warner's book explores the lives of the most notorious, powerful, and influential members of this patrician family over a span of 200 years. Through meticulous research and a captivating narrative style, Warner sheds light on the complex dynamics, rivalries, and tragedies that shaped the Despenser family's history.
