A legendary figure in the world of underground comix, Robert Williams (b. 1943) holds a significant position as a social chronicler of American popular culture. The collection of interviews compiled in Robert Williams: Conversations serves as a testament to his remarkable rhetorical abilities, which are on par with the high level of energy and intensity evident in his underground comix and action-packed canvases.

The public perception of Williams was largely shaped by two pivotal events. In 1987, Guns N' Roses licensed a painting by Williams for the cover of their best-selling album, Appetite for Destruction. However, the cover art created by Williams sparked controversies and was eventually moved to the inside of the album. The second defining event occurred in 1992 when Williams participated in the Helter Skelter exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Protests ensued when a room was dedicated to showcasing his work. By uncovering long-forgotten and hard-to-find interviews, this collection serves as a comprehensive social chronicle of counterculture from the 1960s through the early 2000s.

One of the founding members of the original ZAP Comix collective in the 1960s, Williams drew inspiration from a diverse range of sources, including pulp fiction, hot rod culture, pin-up girls, and traditional academic art. He is credited with inventing the iconic comics character Cootchy Cooty and working for the studios of Ed Big Daddy Roth. During his time, Williams had the opportunity to interact with outlaw motorcycle gangs and pushed the boundaries of what was considered permissible comic book art. He has often been described as a figure who courted scandal and controversy, a reputation that he frequently discusses in some of the interviews included in this collection.

Since the 1980s, Williams has emerged as a prominent figure in the fine art world, raising thought-provoking questions about the relationship between painting and comic art. His artistic journey has continued to evolve, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the visual medium. Robert Williams remains a testament to the power of creativity and the enduring impact of underground comix on popular culture.
