This extensive monograph, published in collaboration with Dirimart, presents a comprehensive collection of works by contemporary artist Sarkis, curated and presented within the context of the one city he continually returns to: Istanbul. His iconic installation Çaylak Sokak, originally showcased in 1986, holds a significant place in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. Named after the street where Sarkis grew up, Çaylak Sokak recreates his family home, featuring a bathtub and his father's shoes, adorned with the German words for war spoils, KRIEGS and SCHATZ. Drawing inspiration from German cultural theorist Aby Warburg's concept of a "Leidschatz," which refers to humanity's treasure of suffering, "Kriegsschatz" became a central theme in Sarkis's oeuvre.

Continuing his exploration of identity and exile, Sarkiss's works presented at the Venice Biennale in 2015, commemorating the centennial of the Armenian genocide, take on a profound significance. In his latest body of work, Red Stained Glass, Sarkis traces the present through fragments from the past. Photographs from Istanbul are rendered in red, fractured, and recombined, further exploring themes such as time and memory, presence and absence, and identity and exile.

Through his artistic lens, Sarkis invites viewers to contemplate the complexities of history, culture, and identity, challenging them to explore the depths of human experience and the enduring impact of trauma. This monograph serves as a testament to Sarkis's artistic brilliance and his unwavering commitment to addressing pressing social and political issues through his art.
