The Finnish-Swedish Archaeological Project in Mesopotamia (FSAPM) conducted a pilot study in the Tūr Abdin region of Northern Mesopotamia from 2014-2016. It used satellite image data to prospect, identify, record, and map unexplored archaeological sites and study their landscapes. The project located new and previously unknown archaeological remains of the Roman military presence on the eastern border against Persia in late antiquity and suggested new border arrangements.

In a groundbreaking initiative from 2014 to 2016, the Finnish-Swedish Archaeological Project in Mesopotamia (FSAPM) embarked on a pilot study to explore an unexplored area in the Tūr Abdin region of Northern Mesopotamia, which is now known as the Mardin Province in southeastern Turkey. FSAPM relies on satellite image data sources to prospect, identify, record, and map largely unknown archaeological sites, as well as study their landscapes in the region. The primary objective of this project is to document and preserve the cultural heritage of these endangered sites, which consist of fortified architectural remains in an ancient border zone between the Graeco-Roman/Byzantine world and Parthia/Persia.
To achieve this, the team employed ortorectified satellite images to accurately determine the location, visible archaeological remains, dimensions, and sizes of the archaeological sites. Field documentation was also conducted in situ, using photographs and detailed notes to capture the intricate details of the sites.
The prospecting efforts in the Tūr Abdīn satellite imagery surpassed many expectations. In the first directory of archaeological sites identified, a remarkable 40% were new and previously unknown, showcasing the immense research potential that still remains hidden in northern Mesopotamia. It is evident that this region holds significant historical and archaeological significance.
While the number of sites in each of the arbitrarily defined regions varied, their characteristics displayed notable differences as well. The project has uncovered new and important archaeological remains of the Roman military presence on the eastern border against Persia in late antiquity, providing valuable insights into the region's historical dynamics. Furthermore, the project has proposed new border arrangements that shed light on the complex political and territorial relationships of the time.
The FSAPM's pilot study in the Tūr Abdin region has laid the foundation for further exploration and research in this historically rich area. With continued dedication and innovative approaches, the project aims to uncover the mysteries of the past and contribute to our understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Mesopotamia.
