This book reflects a time when the Battle of Britain was won, the bombing had eased, and life was showing the first signs of normalization, despite heavy militarization leading up to D-Day. Homosexuality was scorned by the judgemental masses and severely punished by the military, but it was rarely despised by the non-parochial or the intelligent. The real heroine and heroes were of the type who would resist the disparagement or ill treatment of their fellows, and the irrational spiteful treatment of foreigners conditioned the author to write of events that seared his mind as a youngster.

This book, devoid of any pretentious literary aspirations, was hastily assembled by an impatient old man who could have extended it in the style of Dickens or Hardy's The Wellbeloved. It captures a period when the Battle of Britain was successfully won, the bombing had significantly reduced, and life, albeit gray and monotonous due to persistent food queues, began to exhibit initial signs of normalization. Despite the heavy militarization leading up to D-Day, this was achieved. Homosexuality was widely condemned and harshly punished by the military. It was seldom despised by the non-parochial or the intelligent, and the true heroes and heroines were those who stood up against the disparagement or ill-treatment of their fellow beings. Often, they required immense courage to do so.

In a different realm, the author's experiences with the irrational and spiteful treatment of foreigners, including refugees, influenced him to write about events that deeply impacted him as a child. Like many novels, it is likely that fiction incorporates a certain degree of personal experience into its fabric. The events described in the book could have occurred, although they may not have happened exactly as portrayed.
