  • More about Schindler

Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887–1953) was an architect who emigrated to Chicago in 1914 and was hired by Frank Lloyd Wright to work in Los Angeles. He took cues from Cubism and the International Style to shape his unique vision, called "space architecture," which combined geometrical shapes, bold lines, and materials such as wood and concrete with space as a medium in its own right. This radical approach earned him little recognition in his lifetime, but today he is hailed as one of America's most important Modernist pioneers. This collection includes a map locating all of Schindler's most renowned projects, detailed entries, floor plans, and crisp photography of each structure and its interiors.

Rudolph Michael Schindler, a renowned architect hailing from Vienna, embarked on a new chapter in his life by emigrating to Chicago in 1914, alongside his lifelong friend and rival, Richard Neutra. His journey took him to the bustling city of Los Angeles, where he secured a position under the guidance of Frank Lloyd Wright. Schindler's artistic vision was shaped by the principles of Cubism and the International Style, which he amalgamated to create a unique style he termed "space architecture." This innovative approach sought to elevate space itself to a level of artistic expression, treating it as a medium that could be controlled and manipulated just as color or mass.

Despite the limited recognition he received during his lifetime, Schindler is now celebrated as one of the most significant Modernist pioneers in America. His remarkable body of work includes iconic structures such as the Wolfe House, nestled on a steep hillside; the Falk Apartment Building, reminiscent of a treehouse; the Lovell Beach House, recognized as a prime example of Modernist architecture in America; and the Schindler/Chace House, which holds a special place in his heart as both his personal practice and home, shared with his family and Neutra.

Schindler's groundbreaking designs extended beyond private homes to encompass a wide range of commercial buildings, heralding a new era of contemporary construction. This collection, meticulously compiled, offers a comprehensive exploration of Schindler's architectural achievements. It includes a detailed map that locates all of the architect's renowned projects, accompanied by comprehensive entries that provide insights into each structure's history, design, and architectural features. Additionally, the collection features stunning floor plans and crisp photography that showcases the intricate details and interiors of these remarkable buildings.

Through his visionary approach and unwavering dedication to his craft, Rudolph Michael Schindler left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape, shaping the future of modern architecture. His legacy continues to inspire and influence architects and enthusiasts alike, reminding us of the power of creativity and the transformative impact of design.
