"Johann Wolfgang von Goethe found winter unbearable. These "worst months forced him to retreat to the "dachshöhle" of his writing room, while the heated rooms of his house remained unoccupied. Even the famous "Junozimmer" remained untouched for weeks. Goethe had to make do: firewood was expensive, as Germany experienced an energy crisis around 1800. As a result, he was not only interested in modern spar ovens from Berlin; he even designed and built two of his own room heaters, which the famous architect Friedrich Gilly could warm up.
